How to Keep Your Easter Flowers Fresh

Easter Week is upon us. It’s not too early to be thinking about ordering flowers for that special day. We have a wide variety of daisies, tulips, lilies, and more to grace your home or church celebrations.

In the meantime, here are some tips you can use to hold on to your special Easter bouquet for as long as possible.

  1. Trim stems under water to prevent air from entering the stem. Air bubbles can block water from rising up to the flower.
  2. Put an old penny in a vase with tulips to keep the tulips standing up straight.
  3. Keep your vases clean. Remove all leaves that fall under the water line and make sure to use a vase cleaned with soap. Microbes which decompose plant material can grow in unclean, stagnant water and cause your flowers to die quickly. Some professionals suggest adding a ΒΌ tsp of bleach per 1 quart of water (a tiny, tiny bit) to keep the water clean. However, using too much can kill your plants.
  4. Change water and retrim stems every day or every few days. When stems are cut, they release hormones and sugars which are meant to tell the plant to seal up the wound. Cut flowers release these hormones into the water which causes the ends of the stems to harden and close. The flower needs for the hardening part of the stem to be removed and fresh water (without hormones in it) so that it can continue to receive water and nutrients.
  5. Give them salt-free water. While most tap water is perfectly fine for flowers, soft waters can have too much salt which might burn your flowers.
  6. Add nutrients. Often bouquets come with a little packet of plant food. Follow the instructions for a dramatically increased lifetime. If you change the water frequently, ask for a few more packets, or buy your own little tub of cut flower food.
  7. Keep cool. Moving bouquets into a cool area at night, putting a little ice in the water, and keeping them away from fireplaces or heaters can make your flowers last longer.
  8. Mist the flowers gently.
